Community Fitness Program

Community Fitness Program participant walking in the museum The Community Fitness Program at the Museum of Science and Industry boasts 60 to 80 members who regularly walk and do aerobic exercise in the museum’s grand and safe confines.

This free program, in existence more than 21 years at the Museum of Science and Industry, is designed to encourage healthy fitness habits and to help seniors integrate a regular exercise program into their health routines.

Community Grand Rounds

Through the Community Grand Rounds series, university investigators talk with community members about existing research projects that can improve health and wellness. These events involve networking, presentations and panel sessions.

Community Health Focus Hour

Community Health Focus Hour recording session Susan Peters, manager of community relations in the Office of Community Affairs, hosts “Pediatric Asthma: Helping Our Children Breathe,” a discussion on asthma support for school-aged children.  

The Community Health Focus Hour is a weekly WVON radio broadcast series led by faculty and involving community members as guests. The program focuses on specific health topics impacting the community. The program has a social media component and also allows live call in guests.

Health Fairs and Community Event Participation

UChicago Medicine faculty and leaders at Real Men Cook Since 2008, faculty and senior leaders from the University of Chicago Medicine have participated in Real Men Cook, a family-focused South Side community event held annually on Father’s Day.

The University of Chicago Medicine encourages faculty and employee participation in community wide health fairs and community events to provide health-related education or information and other services as needed.

South Side Healthcare Collaborative

Established in 2005, the South Side Healthcare Collaborative (SSHC) is a network of over 30 federally qualified health centers (FQHC), free and charitable clinics and community hospitals. SSHC members are physically located within the 34 communities that make up the south side of Chicago.

The SSHC’s mission is to improve the health of the residents of Chicago’s south side by advancing the work of its members through service, education, networking and advocacy. The manner in which to execute on the mission is through the vision of mobilizing the vast talents and diversity of the SSHC membership yielding enhanced access to quality, affordable, comprehensive health care to those in need. Furthermore, the SSHC has adopted values that exemplify the ideals of its membership organizations. Collaboration, respect, justice, integrity, quality, accountability and responsiveness support the commitment to improving access to health and social support services that help maintain optimal health and wellbeing.
