A Natural History Study of Macular Telangiectasia: The MacTel Study

Study Summary

The University of Chicago and Dr. Hariprasad are conducting a study to understand better the natural history of macular telangiectasia. Macular telangiectasia is a rare eye disorder that results in slow vision loss beginning at adulthood. Unfortunately little medical information is known about this condition at this time. A natural history study follows how a medical condition changes over time. You will not receive any medical treatments in this study that you would not be able to receive if you are not in this study.

Dr. Hariprasad invites you to participate in a research study if you have been diagnosed by your doctor as having macular telangiectasia .There are 11 planned visits in this five-year study. When you come to the clinic for the first visit, you will be asked about your medical and family history. Tests will be performed including fluorescein and ICG angiography, OCT, and a complete examination of your eye including testing sharpness of your vision will be done. We will also take photographs of your eyes.

A medical professional will draw blood samples and send them to a laboratory for analysis. The amount of blood drawn will be no more 30 ml (about six teaspoonsful). Some of the blood will be used to find out about the current state of your health. The reminder of the blood will be used to create a renewable source of DNA to study macular telangiectasia.

You will be asked to return to the clinic every six months. You may receive no benefit from participating in this study.
