Drug Research Study for Patients with Acute Coronary Disease
Study Summary
The University of Chicago and Dr. John Lopez are conducting a research study for subjects who have been diagnosed with acute coronary disease (the flow of blood to a part of the heart is not sufficient, possibly due to a clot inside a narrowed artery in the heart). This condition requires medical treatment which could also include a procedure called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). This procedure should restore the blood flow in the vessels of the heart. One complication that can occur after a PCI procedure is blood clotting and narrowing of the artery in the area that was treated. This can result in a decrease in the blood flow to heart. To avoid this complication, patients are given blood-thinning drugs as part of their routine care after this procedure. The purpose of this research study is to see if different doses of a blood thinning drug in combination with different doses of another blood thinning drug will lessen the occurance of complications in patients with symptoms of acute coronary disease who undergo a PCI.
Subjects will be in this study for approximately 30 days. Some of the procedures that will occur in this study include ECG tests (a recording of the electrical activity of the heart), physical exams, blood and urine tests, and the PCI procedure. You will be given the study drugs immediately following the PCI procedure to be taken daily until day 30 of the study.
Benefits
You may not benefit directly from this research if, for example, the study drugs do not work. You may benefit if the study drugs prove to be safer and/or more effective than any other treatment you might have received. The information learned about the study drugs and how they work may be helpful to patients with heart disease in the future.
