Drug Research Study for Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

Study Summary

The University of Chicago and Dr. John Lopez are conducting a research study for subjects who have had an acute coronary syndrome (called ACS which is a heart attack or very severe chest pain) and have a higher risk of blood clot formation than other people. Blood clot formation is linked to a risk of medical problems such as ACS and some types of stroke. This study is being carried out to see if an experimental drug is effective in stopping the formation of new blood clots. This experimental drug may reduce the risk of medical problems such as heart attack or stroke in patients with ACS who have an increased risk of blood clot formation. An experimental drug is a drug that has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so the use in this study is considered experimental. You will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to one of two study groups: 1) you will receive the study drug or 2) you will receive an FDA approved drug that is commonly used for blood clot prevention.

Your participation in this study will last from seven to 13 months depending on when you enter the study. You may have six to seven scheduled visits. Some of the procedures that will occur in this study include ECG tests (a recording of the electrical activity of the heart), physical exams, blood tests, and completion of questionnaires.

Benefits

You may not benefit directly from this research if, for example, the study drug does not work. You may benefit if the study drug proves to be safer and/or more effective than any other treatment you might have received. The information learned about the study drug and how it works may be helpful to patients with heart disease in the future.
