Research Study for Patients Undergoing Nuclear Stress Imaging
Study Summary
The University of Chicago and Dr. Rupa Mehta are conducting a research study for patients who are scheduled to undergo nuclear stress imaging as part of their routine medical care. The purpose of this study is to learn more about the use of a test called Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) perfusion imaging. During this procedure, patients are given a drug that makes the heart and blood activity visible when viewed with a special camera. They may also be given a second drug which makes their heart beat faster, allowing us to see the activity of the heart under stress. Sometimes this is referred to as a stress test. For this study we are gathering information about how patient position [whether you are imaged lying on your back (supine) vs. on your stomach (prone)] affects the interpretation of the test.
Normally the stress test is performed with you lying on your stomach only. If you participate in this research study, we will perform your stress test in the usual manner with the only change being that you will have pictures taken in two positions, lying on your back and lying on your stomach. This will require about an extra 15 minutes of your time. As part of the research, in order to obtain the pictures taken while you are on your back, you will be exposed to a very small amount of extra radiation beyond that of a typical stress test. You will actively participate in this study only at the time of your stress test. Your data will be retained for analysis for a longer period of time.

You are not expected to benefit directly from this research. However, the medical knowledge obtained from this study may be of considerable benefit to help treat patients with heart disease in the future.
