Research Study for Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

The University of Chicago and Dr. Sandeep Nathan are conducting a research study for patients with coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease occurs when the blood supply to a blood vessel surrounding the heart is partially blocked. To open this blockage, your doctors have decided that you should undergo a PCI (a procedure using a very thin tube and small balloons and/or devices to unblock the artery). When a person has a PCI procedure, he/she usually receives a blood thinning medication called unfractionated heparin.

This is a research study of an experimental study blood thinning drug that may be an alternative to unfractionated heparin. The word "experimental" means the drug is still being tested and is not approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The purpose of this study is to compare the experimental study drug and unfractionated heparin and their effects on blood clotting and risk of other events involving the heart. For the purposes of this study, you will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to one of two groups. One group will receive the study drug and the other the regularly used dosage of unfractionated heparin.

You will be in this study for about 35 days. Some of the procedures that will be done during this study are: physical exams, echocardiograms, routine blood testing, and the PCI procedure. After the initial procedures, you will see a study doctor at 12 to 16 and 30 to 35 days after the completion of the PCI procedure.

Benefits

You may not receive any direct medical benefit from participating in this study. Your participation may provide information about that may benefit other patients with coronary artery disease in the future.

Participation Details

• Must be at least 19 years of age
• Must not be pregnant
• Must meet study medical criteria as evaluated by Dr. Nathan
