Drug Study for Genotype 1 Hepatitis C

The University of Chicago and Dr. Reddy are conducting a study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of taking a statin (a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol) along with the standard of care medications in previous partial responders (those whose HCV RNA levels decline but never become undetectable after 12 weeks of treatment) with genotype I hepatitis C (HCV). This use of a statin is considered experimental since it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

After you are screened for study participation and the study doctor determines you are eligible to be a part of this study, you will return to the clinic for a few baseline procedures. After that you will take the statin drug for eight weeks and come in throughout this time for study evaluations. At the end of eight weeks, you will discontinue the statin and begin the 24-week standard of care treatment for HCV. During this phase your study doctor will test your Hepatitis C at four and 12 weeks into treatment to determine whether you are responding to the drugs.

As part of the study, you may undergo the following tests: physical exams, blood tests, pregnancy tests and liver ultrasounds.

Your may participate in this study for up to 22 months.

You may or may not benefit from taking part in this study however other people with your disease may benefit from what is learned in this study.
