Heart Imaging Exams for Healthy Volunteers
Study Summary
The purpose of this research study is to use heart imaging exams in order to gain an improved understanding of heart and lung complications that often occur in sickle cell patients. In this study, data gathered from the healthy volunteers will be compared to data from sickle cell patients in order to help further our understanding.
Participation in this study will last one day and includes:
- A physical exam
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the heart (uses a large magnet, radio waves, and a computer to produce detailed images of the heart)
- Ultrasound of the heart and blood vessels in the wrist (ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of structures inside the body)
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) which measures the electrical activity of the heart
You will be compensated for your participation in this study.
Benefits
You are not expected to benefit directly from participation in this study. We hope the information learned from this study will benefit sickle cell patients who are at risk of heart disease in the future and help doctors take better care of their patients.
