Genetics Study on Bipolar Disorder

Study Summary

The purpose of the study is to improve our understanding of Bipolar Disorder. We wish to examine the genetic material (DNA) of individuals within families where Bipolar Disorder is present. Our goal is to gain insight into the precise locations of genes that contribute to the development of these illnesses.

There may be no personal benefit to the subject for participating. The greatest potential benefit will be to society as a whole. Your participation will help us achieve our goals of better understanding the genetics of Bipolar Disorder. Knowing more about Bipolar Disorder could help with prevention and treatment. There are no more than minimal medical or psychological risks associated with participating in this study. Study participation may take approximately three months, dependent on subject availability. We may request your participation in long-term follow-up at some future time. Follow up relates to questions about course of illness which could be correlated with genetic marker information from blood specimens already given.
