University of Chicago Hospitals again near the top in annual survey

July 9, 1999

For the third year in a row, the University of Chicago Hospitals was selected as one of the 13 best hospitals in the United States by U.S.News & World Report in their annual survey of America's nearly 7,000 hospitals.

In the July 19, 1999 Best Hospitals issue, the University of Chicago Hospitals ranked 13th nationally overall and among the best in all 12 specialties rigorously studied.

The University of Chicago Hospitals programs that ranked in the top ten include endocrinology (#7), gastroenterology (#7) and cancer (#7). Others in the top 20 include gynecology (#14), geriatrics (#12), and pulmonology (#14). Five other programs--cardiology and cardiac surgery, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), neurology orthopedics, and rheumatology--scored in the top 30.

The University of Chicago Hospitals were the only Illinois facility to merit inclusion in the Honor Roll of the Best Hospitals in the United States.
