The University of Chicago Heart Transplant Team, including Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD, Chief of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, and Allen Anderson, MD, Medical Director of the Cardiac Transplant Service, will host 250 heart transplant recipients and their families.
What
University of Chicago Annual Picnic for Heart Transplant Recipients and Families. The event, now in its sixth year, celebrates those who have received heart transplants at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Participants will enjoy a picnic, all-day general admission to the Museum of Science and Industry, and tours of the museum's Coal Mine--Old Ben #17--and "All Aboard the Silver Streak" Pioneer Zephyr.

Why
To celebrate life after a heart transplant. Heart transplantation provides recipients a second chance at life: love, work, family, hobbies, sports—anything and everything. The University of Chicago heart transplant program is the largest in Illinois, and one of the largest in the Midwest. The program's results are among the best in the nation. Over the last five years, University of Chicago success rates have exceeded the national average. A large number of UCH patients are considered high-risk, including those who require re-transplantation. University of Chicago surgeons have performed transplants on patients who have fallen outside traditional transplant criteria, including some older patients and those who have been rejected for transplant by other medical centers. Also, the University of Chicago is one of the most experienced medical centers in the world at performing multiple organ transplantation.
