Fifth annual Comer Kids' Classic

Running to find cures

October 11, 2007

Channel 7 News Reporter John Garcia will emcee the fifth annual Comer Kids' Classic presented by U.S. Equities Realty and PMA Consultants, Saturday, October 20, at 9 a.m.

"Each year the event grows stronger," said Daniel Mohan, who founded the race with his wife Jean. "Last year, more than 500 people participated. Seeing the run grow is important to me. My family knows firsthand the importance of supporting top-notch pediatric research."

At age four, their son Jimmy battled an aggressive childhood cancer with tumors abutting his brain and on his lung.

For a year, Jimmy underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, which eventually halted the cancer. "Thanks to cutting-edge therapy and care, my son is now a healthy, active 5th grader," Mohan said.

Exhibits at the Comer Kids' Classic will open at 9 a.m. Events will include a live band and a warm-up led by Ronald McDonald.

The 5K run/walk, a USATF-certified course that winds through historic Hyde Park, will start and end at the University of Chicago Quad at 58th and University Avenue.

Early registration is $25 for adults and $10 for children, 10 and younger. Early registration closes Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. for online registration and 5 p.m. at the University of Chicago Bookstore. The bookstore is located at 970 E. 58th St., Chicago.

To register online, go to: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1468666 or call Chicago Special Events Management at (773) 868-3010. Registration the day of the event is $30 for adults, $10 for children.
