Physicians Named Among Chicago's 'Best of the Best'

Physicians at the University of Chicago Medicine once again are being honored among the best of the best in a ranking by Chicago magazine. The January 2012 issue honors 87 physicians at the University of Chicago Medicine and at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital. In addition to their clinical expertise and commitment to compassionate care, these physicians were selected because here at the medical center, they are uniquely positioned to help solve the most vital challenges in medicine and science.

The 'Top Doctors' issue features several physician profiles, including one for Melissa Gilliam, MD, MPH, chief of family planning and professor of obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics. In the article, Dr. Gilliam discusses her efforts to prevent teen pregnancy and address societal problems that contribute to it.

"These are bigger issues than what an ob/gyn can address," she told the magazine. "I need economists, social scientists, specialists in education. … Hopefully, we can interrupt the cycle of poverty and poor education that perpetuates across generations."

Pointing out that there are an estimated 35,000 doctors in the metropolitan Chicago area, Chicago magazine named nearly 500 physicians to the list of Top Doctors, based on information from the research firm Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.
