Gerhard Ziemer, MD, PhD, specializes in a wide range of congenital cardiac surgery procedures, including complex, primary, and multi-stage repair in newborns, as well as primary and repeat surgeries in adults with congenital heart defects. Dr. Ziemer has expertise in homograft and autograft valve replacements in all age groups, and in trachea resections and reconstructions in newborns. He has performed more than 4,000 congenital heart surgeries in children and adults. In 1989, Dr. Ziemer did the first successful neonatal autograft aortic valve replacement (Ross operation) in the world.
In close cooperation with pediatric and adult interventional cardiologists, Dr. Ziemer conducts clinical research in the field of cardiac hybrid procedures. By combining surgical with non-surgical techniques, hybrid procedures may offer a safer and more effective "non-open-heart approach" as part of a staged repair of congenital heart conditions.
Dr. Ziemer has been involved in many international scientific societies, academic boards, and charity activities throughout his career. He served on the founding governing council of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and was member of the scientific board of the German Pediatric Heart Center Foundation. He was the first president of the European Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Association and currently serves as a board member. Additionally, Dr. Ziemer travels to Lima, Peru for two weeks each year to operate on children with congenital heart disease and to educate Peruvian colleagues on the latest techniques for pediatric heart surgery.
