Mark D. McKee, MDAssistant Professor of SurgeryDr. Mark McKee specializes in the surgical treatment of cancer patients. Surgery is often only one part of a patient's total cancer care. Dr. McKee works closely with other University of Chicago physicians to integrate surgery into a multidisciplinary approach for complex cancer cases. He specializes in surgery for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract--including stomach, colon, and rectal cancers, liver tumors, and pancreas tumors. He has extensive experience in the treatment of malignant melanoma and breast cancer. Cancer that has spread inside the abdomen is not effectively treated by standard surgical procedures. At the University of Chicago, Dr. McKee can treat some of these cancers with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy given during the operation. Dr. McKee is also an accomplished cancer researcher. He leads a research laboratory investigating new treatment strategies for some of the most difficult to treat tumors. By studying the way the immune system recognizes cancer cells, Dr. McKee's lab is designing cell therapies and vaccine treatments to incorporate with surgery for tumors that are not treated effectively by current methods. For his work, Dr. McKee has been awarded research grants from the American College of Surgeons and the National Cancer Institute. Practice LocationsCenter for Advanced Medicine
