James Curran, MD, is an expert rheumatologist, specializing in late onset rheumatoid arthritis. He was the first doctor to define therapeutic requirements and clinical outcomes of the disease, when he published the initial 50 cases in Seminars of Arthritis & Rheumatism in 1992. Dr. Curran also has expertise in inflammatory muscle diseases, including polymyositis and dermatomyositis.
Dr. Curran's research focuses on improving treatment options for patients with inflammatory diseases. In one study, he examined the use of IL6 and Rituxan to treat advanced rheumatoid arthritis. In another, he and his colleagues studied the impact of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors in patients with refractory sarcoidosis.
An accomplished author and speaker, Dr. Curran has published abstracts and articles in several peer-reviewed journals and is frequently asked to present at conferences on arthritis and autoimmune disease. For the past 10 years, he has been named one of the "Top Doctors in Chicago" by Chicago magazine and one of "America’s Top Doctors" by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.
