He has expertise in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques. A respected educator, Dr. Birnie teaches medical students and residents in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Chicago. He currently serves as president of the Chicago Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Birnie is also a faculty advisor to the University of Chicago Rugby Football Club.
