Steven L. Small, MD, PhDProfessor of NeurologyDr. Steven Small's interests involve the evaluation and treatment of patients with motor disorders from stroke. Patients receive complete neurological evaluations, complemented by evaluations of language function, and in some cases, general cognitive function. In some cases, patients will be under treatment with various behavioral and pharmacological therapies, have concomitant depression, or be showing unusually good or poor recovery. The goal is both to help patients with the subacute and chronic manifestations of stroke and to understand better the processes involved in their recovery. Dr. Small's research also focuses on neurobiological changes that take place as people recover from a stroke. The laboratory uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the organization of the normal human cerebral cortex and the changes that it undergoes after neurological injury, particularly stroke. Damage to the cerebral cortex has profound effects on such functions as learning, memory, language, and complex motor activity. His current projects are in the areas of language and motor function, and are concerned with both the normal anatomy of these functions and their recovery after stroke. In the study of normal adults, the lab has found that the language areas of the brain are more widely distributed than previously thought. In the motor system, Dr. Small has found that left- and right-handed people use somewhat different brain networks when making simple and complex finger movements.
