Sudhir Srivastava, MD

Assistant Professor of Surgery

Director, Robotic & Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Sudhir Srivastava, MD, has earned an international reputation for his expertise in minimally invasive heart surgery, including robotic surgery. Such procedures are much less invasive to the body and can reduce pain and recovery time dramatically.

Dr. Srivastava practiced in Texas for more than 25 years before coming to Chicago in 2007. Over the course of his career, he has performed more than 5,000 cardiac surgeries. In recent years, he has pioneered beating-heart Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass (TECAB) and off-pump coronary artery bypass through a left lateral thoracotomy (ThoraCAB), performing more of these procedures than any other surgeon in the world.

In a TECAB surgery, Dr. Srivastava uses robotic assistance to perform coronary bypass surgery using four to five fingertip-size holes on the side of the chest. ThoraCAB surgery is performed through a three to five-inch incision on the side of the chest, an approach more frequently used for bypass surgery involving more than three vessel grafts. Both techniques result in less scarring and a reduced risk for complications since there is no large incision and splitting of the breastbone. Also, these procedures are performed on a beating heart without the use of a heart-lung machine.

Beyond coronary bypass surgery, Dr. Srivastava has refined many other minimally invasive approaches to cardiac and thoracic surgery. He has special expertise in the surgical treatment of heart valve disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and congenital heart disease in adults. He also has performed robotic minimally invasive procedures to remove mediastinal tumors and lung resections for lung cancer. He continues to advance other surgical approaches to reduce trauma to the patient and improve outcomes.

Dr. Srivastava has a passion for using the most advanced, reliable technologies to improve patients’ quality of life, and for sharing his expertise to improve the practice of medicine. He routinely trains other surgeons from around the world on minimally invasive heart surgery. A native of India, Dr. Srivastava regularly visits the country to contribute his skills to charity medical aid missions.

Read More About Dr. Srivastava

Dr. Srivastava was featured in a USA Today story about TECAB surgery.

David Wunch traveled from Tulsa to Chicago to have a closed-chest TECAB procedure performed by Dr. Srivastava. View David’s story.

For Sharon Jackson, having the closed-chest TECAB procedure was a big improvement compared to the open-chest bypass surgery she had years ago. Dr. Srivastava performed her TECAB and is featured in this patient story.
