He is a pioneer in the field of thoracic surgery including minimally invasive thoracic surgery. A significant number of his procedures are performed using robot-assisted or video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) techniques. He is well respected for his expertise in thoracic organ transplantation. Dr. Vigneswaran treats patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma and tumors of the mediastinum. He also performs surgery for advanced lung diseases, including lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema and lung transplantation for various end-stage lung diseases. Dr. Vigneswaran is listed as a top doctor by Chicago magazine, Marquis Who's Who, America's Top Surgeons and the physician rating service Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. Dr. Vigneswaran holds leadership positions in several medical organizations, including the American College of Chest Physicians and the International College of Surgeons. He has also been named a fellow of surgical and medical societies in four countries, including the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Canada, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Royal Society of Medicine, London. His current research interests include: lung transplantation outcomes; lung cancer and mesothelioma surgery outcomes; ischemia reperfusion lung injury; lung preservation and minimal access thoracic surgery, including robotic surgery. He participates in National Cancer Institute-directed thoracic oncology treatment protocols and other multi-center studies in the field of lung cancer and lung transplantation. A strong advocate for multidisciplinary team-based approaches to disease management, he works in collaboration with physicians in pulmonary medicine, medical and radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and other specialties. Dr. Vigneswaran has authored more than 85 original articles and book chapters, and edited an internationally authored book on lung transplantation. He is regularly asked to speak at national and international conferences. Dr. Vigneswaran is on the editorial review boards of several prestigious medical journals including Chest, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, International Surgery, Clinical Investigation, Journal of Surgical Research, American Review of Respiratory Diseases, American Journal of Transplantation and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
