William Harper, MDAssociate Professor of MedicineMedical Director, Program for Personalized Health & PreventionDr. William Harper is an internist and medical director of the Program for Personalized Health & Prevention. He also sees patients in the Primary Care Group and serves as lead internist for the Chicago Blackhawks National Hockey League club. Dr. Harper believes that communication is the cornerstone for providing the highest quality of care. By knowing his patients well, he learns which health habits may increase their risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. He then counsels patients, using individualized recommendations to encourage them to change these behaviors and thereby reduce the risk. Dr. Harper is deeply committed to prevention, and through the Program for Personalized Health & Prevention, he and his colleagues are building a model that could fundamentally change the way health care is practiced. Dr. Harper takes this commitment to communication and prevention to the classroom. He is actively involved in teaching University of Chicago medical students the critical skills of communication, physical diagnosis and clinical reasoning.
