Who is at Risk?

There are a number of factors that can increase a person's risk for developing cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract. We offer preventive treatment for people whose lifestyles or medical histories involve factors that place them at high risk, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Moderate to heavy alcohol consumption
  • Exposure to asbestos and other toxic substances
  • Genetic/family history
  • Previous occurrence of upper aerodigestive cancer
  • Pulmonary diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
