Why Choose Us for Breast Cancer Care?

Comprehensive Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnostic Services

At the University of Chicago Medicine, we're dedicated to finding breast cancer early, when it's easier to treat. Our board-certified radiologists provide a full range of breast imaging technologies, including advanced imaging such as 3-D mammography and automated whole breast ultrasound. If cancer is suspected or found, our nationally known breast pathologists are highly skilled at assessing the breast cancer type, which guides breast cancer treatment. For women who may have a genetic risk for breast cancer, our Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Clinic provides genetic counseling and testing to help patients understand their risk for cancer and options to reduce their risk. »Learn more about breast cancer detection and diagnosis

Pioneers in Breast Cancer Treatment and Research

Our institution is the home of many firsts in the realm of breast cancer care, and our breast cancer experts continually advance the program with research, leading-edge techniques and treatment options.

Our breast cancer program is the first and only institution in the Chicagoland area to offer a novel procedure, called radioactive seed localization for women that have cancers that are only seen on mammograms or ultrasound. In addition, our radiation oncologists were the first in the Chicagoland area to offer advanced radiation therapy treatment options, including prone position (lying chest down) radiation therapy, designed to target breast tumors without compromising other nearby organs, such as the heart and lungs.

Breast cancer clinical trials

The University of Chicago Medicine is also one of the country's leading sites for robust breast cancer clinical trials. We are the only institution in Chicago that offers phase I, phase II and phase III clinical trials for women with early-stage and metastatic breast cancer and the only institution in Chicago that is part of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium. Our participation in these clinical trials means greater access to novel care, including neoadjuvant therapy (treatment before surgery), for breast cancer patients.

Following treatment, our breast cancer team also boasts one of the most comprehensive post-breast cancer services in Chicago. Our plastic surgeons offer the full menu of advanced breast reconstruction options, including the DIEP flap, an approach in which our surgeons are among the most proficient in the country. »Learn about the range of breast cancer treatments offered at UChicago Medicine

Specialized Care for Lymphedema

David Chang, MD David Chang, MD, is an expert in lymphedema surgery.

The University of Chicago Medicine is home to the first and only surgical lymphedema program in the region. As many as 25 to 30 percent of women who have breast cancer surgery with lymph node removal and radiation therapy develop lymphedema, a disorder in which lymph fluid accumulates, leading to chronic swelling in the upper arm. Our program offers both lymphovenous bypass and lymph node transfer for treatment of lymphedema. »Learn more about lymphedema surgery

Nurse Navigators Guide Patients Through the Treatment Process

Learning about a breast cancer diagnosis can be an overwhelming experience, which is why the breast cancer program houses a dedicated navigator program. Our well-trained nurses function as breast health navigators to help patients transition smoothly from one department to the next. Most of our nurses are certified through the Oncology Nursing Society, which brings a special cancer-focused expertise to our patients. We also have nurse practitioners who subspecialize in breast surgery, serving as an added resource for our patients.

There are also multiple on- and off-site support services provided by the American Cancer Society and monthly support groups facilitated by a trained social worker and our cancer support center. Our nursing team also offers prosthetic breasts, wigs, compression apparel and post-surgical garments through our on-site boutique.
