Breast surgeon Sarah Shubeck, MD, meets with a patient in clinic
Breast surgeon Sarah Shubeck, MD, left, is part of a team of specialists who are focused on breast cancer care.

The breast cancer team at the University of Chicago Medicine has expertise across the full spectrum of breast cancer care: breast imaging, breast surgery, medical and radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, clinical genetics, pathology, nursing, and care for male breast cancer patients. Through our integrated approach, patients receive a comprehensive treatment plan that optimizes chances of survival and quality of life, including those diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.

But, it's not enough to offer every breast cancer treatment. Each breast cancer patient is unique, so our breast cancer experts take the time to thoroughly and thoughtfully explain each patient’s disease and treatment options so they can make an informed choice about their preferred care.

Compassionate, one-on-one attention to each cancer patient is part of the high caliber of care patients can expect from UChicago Medicine. We're dedicated to making the breast cancer care experience as seamless and accommodating as possible. For example, our specialists work together to streamline appointments for patients, so that they can be scheduled the same day.

Our Breast Cancer Care Services

At UChicago Medicine, we're committed to finding breast cancer early, when it's easier to treat. Our board-certified radiologists provide the full range of breast imaging technologies. Learn more about breast cancer screening.

UChicago Medicine is one of the country's leading sites for robust breast cancer clinical trials. We are the only institution in Chicago offering phase I, phase II and phase III clinical trials for early-stage and metastatic breast cancer. Participation in clinical trials means greater access to novel breast cancer care, including neoadjuvant therapy (treatment before surgery).

We also provide one of Chicago's most comprehensive post-breast cancer service offerings. Our plastic surgeons offer all types of advanced breast reconstruction options, including the DIEP flap (DIEP stands for deep inferior epigastric artery perforator), an approach for which our surgeons are among the most proficient in the country. Learn about the range of breast cancer treatments offered at UChicago Medicine.

We are home to the first and only surgical lymphedema program in the region. As many as 25 to 30 percent of patients who have breast cancer surgery with lymph node removal and radiation therapy develop lymphedema, a disorder in which lymph fluid accumulates, leading to chronic swelling in the upper arm. Our program offers both lymphovenous bypass and lymph node transfer for treatment of lymphedema. Learn more about lymphedema surgery.

Most UChicago Medicine breast cancer team nurses are certified through the Oncology Nursing Society, a distinction that brings a special cancer-focused expertise to our patients.

Nurse navigators help patients transition smoothly from one department to the next. Some of our nurse practitioners have advanced training in breast surgery, an added resource for our patients.

Our nursing team also offers prosthetic breasts, wigs, compression apparel and post-surgical garments through our onsite boutique.
