More than 700,000 people are diagnosed with liver cancer across the globe each year, according to the American Cancer Society, making it the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

In order to meet the increasing needs of these patients, the University of Chicago Medicine's Liver Tumor Clinic brings together a multidisciplinary team with expertise in both end-stage liver disease and liver cancer, including primary and metastatic disease, and the ability to manage complex cases and treat patients without curative options. Together, these specialists closely review each patient’s diagnosis individually to determine the best treatments for him or her.

We understand that every case is unique, and we aim to provide each patient with an individualized treatment plan tailored to fit his or her specific needs. In many cases, we offer our patients the ability to see multiple consultants in one day to eliminate the need for repeated trips to the hospital.

A Collaborative Treatment Strategy

By combining the skills of our renowned surgeons, hepatologists, radiologists, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists on this interdisciplinary team, we are able to perform a collaborative, thorough review of each patient and provide a comprehensive strategy for personalized liver tumor care.

Our team of specialists understands the complexities that often accompany treating liver cancer. For instance, patients may have pre-existing liver disease by the time they are diagnosed with liver cancer, which requires our physicians to manage two conditions simultaneously to provide the best overall outcome. Because our Liver Tumor Clinic is comprised of physicians that are members of the UChicago Medicine's NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, patients can feel confident that they are in good hands.

Ongoing Research and Innovative Clinical Trials

As part of our dedication to providing the best, most advanced care, our physicians are actively involved in multiple clinical trials for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer. Through these trials, we can offer our patients targeted treatments that are not widely accessible yet, including new immunotherapies and combination therapies.

We are currently offering phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trials, and have options for both patients who have not received any treatment for liver cancer, and for those who have been previously treated. »Learn more about our clinical trials.

Advanced Diagnostic Technology

Our Clinic provides access to state-of-the-art imaging modalities for diagnostics and treatment, including MR elastography (MRE), high-intensity focused ultrasound guided by magnetic resonance (MR-HIFU), and sophisticated radiation therapy imaging and delivery techniques. With these advanced imaging techniques, our doctors can better diagnose and treat your disease.
