Emergency Medicine

ambulance

The Section of Emergency Medicine directs the Chicago South Prehospital EMS System and also provides evaluation and treatment of ill or injured patients in the University of Chicago Hospitals' Emergency Department. The section's physicians and staff are skilled in the care of patients with emergent medical and surgical problems.

The section also maintains the University of Chicago Hospitals' Aeromedical Network, which offers both helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft transportation. The aeromedical service is staffed 24-hours-a-day by a pilot, flight nurse, and flight physician. The helicopter and aircraft are equipped to transport critically ill or injured patients--including neonatal, pediatric, and obstetrical emergencies, and cardiac patients requiring balloon pump support.
