Surgical Care for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The University of Chicago Medicine has long been an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Experts in the diagnosis and treatment of both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, our physicians are leaders in providing the best quality of care through a multidisciplinary approach. Working in close collaboration with gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists -- our surgeons develop a treatment plan that fits the needs of each patient.
The Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery includes some of the most experienced IBD surgeons in the world; they are trained to treat patients with complex or refractory inflammatory bowel disease. In addition we are one of the few medical centers in the nation who routinely offer patients a minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgical approach for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, even if a patient has had a traditional open surgery in the past.
