Surgical Care for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

We have long been an internationally recognized center of excellence for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, our surgeons are leaders in providing the best quality of care through a multidisciplinary approach. Our surgeons--working in close collaboration with gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists--develop a treatment plan that fits the needs of each patient.

Our level of experience is unsurpassed. University of Chicago surgeons rank among the most experienced IBD specialists in the world. Here, our physicians perform more IBD surgeries than any other medical center in the area. We treat many of the difficult cases that would otherwise be turned down at other institutions.

We routinely use minimally invasive, laparoscopic techniques to perform surgery. The University of Chicago Hospitals is the only center in the Midwest currently using minimally invasive approaches to treat ulcerative colitis. By using the laparoscope, patients have minimally scarring with quicker recovery than over traditional surgeries.
