Center for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity

The University of Chicago Medicine is nationally recognized for its surgical weight loss program, which offers state-of-the-art approaches to obesity through surgical means.

Because we have been a leader in the field of bariatrics for nearly 20 years, our multidisciplinary team is the most experienced in the Chicago area. Here, we have board-certified surgeons specializing in advanced minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgical techniques as well as bariatric surgery.

We are one of a few programs in the country -- and the only program in the Midwest -- that offers all four major surgical options for the treatment of severe obesity using minimally invasive techniques:

  • Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)
  • Roux-en Y gastric bypass (RYGB)
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (DS)
  • Adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band®)

We are also a regional and national referral center for complex and revisional bariatric surgery.

With minimally invasive surgery, patients experience less pain, less scarring, and a shorter hospital stay than traditional surgeries.

Our program has earned national bariatric surgery certification from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, signifying the highest standards in safe, quality weight loss surgery. Only a select group of bariatric surgery programs in the nation have met the requirements to achieve this important distinction. Our center has also been awarded Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction for Bariatric Surgery and named an Institute of Quality for Bariatric Surgery by Aetna as well as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by Cigna.

We recognize that obesity is a complex, chronic condition. We tailor surgical treatment to each individual -- ensuring the most beneficial outcomes for the patient. In addition, patients with chronic conditions related or unrelated to obesity have access to hundreds of respected specialists in diabetes, heart disease, digestive problems, and other disorders. In fact, we regularly treat patients who require special surgical expertise due to other complicating conditions.
