Why Choose Us for Bariatric Surgery?
Experts in Weight Loss Surgery
As a multidisciplinary team, the surgeons at the University of Chicago Medicine have more than 12 years experience and have performed more than 2,000 weight loss procedures. Because of our experience with all bariatric surgery options, our experts can accurately recommend the best surgical treatment for each patient. Our experienced surgeons have better outcomes -- and lower mortality rates -- than most medical centers.
In addition, our surgeons regularly treat people who also have obesity-related problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and digestive disorders. In some cases, these conditions can make surgery riskier. Our experts draw on their years of experience to address each patient's specific needs before, during, and after surgery -- making the entire procedure safer for even the most complex cases.

Multidisciplinary Care Teams
Obesity is a complex, chronic medical disease. Our patients are thoroughly evaluated by a multidisciplinary team -- from medical history to eating behaviors to a number of psychological concerns. Our team approach uses the latest research, technology, and ongoing nutritional, behavioral, and psychological support to give our patients the best care possible. The University of Chicago Medicine team includes:
- Board-certified surgeons who are specialists in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery
- Certified nurse practitioner
- Nurse clinician
- Registered dietitians
- Insurance coordinator
Because of our team approach, our patients have easy access to numerous experts in other specialties -- including endocrinology and cardiology -- if they need treatment for obesity-related problems.
We also recognize that surgery may not be the best option for every patient. Together, the doctor and patient come to a decision about the treatment that best fits the patient's needs.
Minimally Invasive Approaches
Our surgeons are innovators in minimally invasive weight loss surgery. We were the first surgeons in the Chicago area to perform laparoscopic Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery. We are the only surgeons in the Midwest to perform duodenal switch surgery laparoscopically. Because nearly all of our procedures are performed laparoscopically, our patients have an average hospital stay of two days -- and a recovery time of only two to four weeks. » Read more about minimally invasive bariatric surgery.
Innovative Tracking System
The Center for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity is leading the way in managing your care before, during, and after weight loss surgery. We use a comprehensive online system for registration and tracking your post-operative care. In addition, this system allows our team to monitor your progress more efficiently. To learn more about this system, as well as our bariatric surgery program, we invite you to a bariatric surgery information session.
