Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Replacement: William's Story

William Luna needed surgery to correct a badly functioning mitral valve. But after having had two previous open-heart surgeries, William's doctors told him that he would likely not survive another. So he turned to University of Chicago surgeon Jai Raman, MD, PhD, to have minimally invasive valve surgery -- an approach where the surgeon operates through a small incision at the side of the chest, resulting in a faster recovery and a lower risk for post-surgical complications. Unlike his prior surgeries, William's breastbone was not split or spread open for this advanced procedure.
