Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic

The Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic at the University of Chicago provides comprehensive diagnostics and advanced treatment for all forms of inherited cardiovascular disease. These include inherited cardiomyopathies, inherited heart rhythm disorders including Long QT syndrome, and inherited vascular conditions such as early onset familial forms of coronary artery disease and Marfan syndrome. In addition, we see individuals with inherited neuromuscular diseases that affect the heart, such as muscular dystrophies.

The Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic, established in 1996, has worked with patients and families who have been diagnosed and those who are at risk for developing these diseases because they are present in their relatives. We provide treatment, risk assessment and risk reduction. Because of the genetic nature of these disorders, our team often works with the patient’s family members to identify relatives who are at risk for cardiovascular disease and to make recommendations that may prevent or minimize future health problems. We use sophisticated genetic testing to detect gene mutations known to be linked to various inherited forms of cardiovascular disease.

Our mission is to treat those who have been diagnosed as well as to reduce the risk to individuals whose family history suggests a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. We work with family members who may be at risk for developing cardiovascular disease because of genetic factors, and take the entire family into account throughout our diagnosis, screening, risk assessment and treatment processes.

This is a highly specialized cardiovascular program that draws patients and families from throughout the United States. The University of Chicago Medicine's program also is one of the oldest and most experienced programs in the U.S. in this particular area of specialization.
