Our experts have made many important discoveries with regards to atherosclerosis and other disorders that affect the arteries and veins--and we can offer patients the newest treatments:

  • We often participate in clinical trials of new treatments. For instance, the University of Chicago Medicine was a contributing medical center in each of the nationally sponsored trials of carotid endarterectomy--which has since become standard treatment for carotid atherosclerosis.
  • Our surgeons are instrumental in developing and using non-operative and operative techniques for vascular reconstruction.
  • We have a history of pioneering efforts in vascular surgery. Our physicians are funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association to develop new knowledge about the origin and treatment of vascular disease.

Because any surgery has inherent risks, we continually strive to make operations safer. Our surgeons were among the first to use EEG monitoring in the operating room to observe the patient's brain function throughout surgery.

Continuity of Care

Our vascular surgeons are the patient's primary contact while they are at the University of Chicago, and are readily accessible to each patient and his or her family, whether they need more information or want reassurance. Together, the patient, family, and vascular surgeon explore all treatment options available and determine the best treatment for a patient's condition and lifestyle. Each patient's primary care physician is also kept fully informed of the patient's progress so that he or she can participate in treatment decisions and help the patient with recovery and rehabilitation. Long after a patient's procedures are finished, their University of Chicago vascular surgeon will continue to care for that patient in conjunction with the patient's primary care physician. With the primary care physician, they will help the patient manage his or her health and lifestyle to ensure a speedy recovery and a healthy future.
