Our team provides cutting-edge technology and a comprehensive approach to patient care. Our state-of-the-art endoscopy suite is equipped with the latest technology and is located in the University of Chicago Medicine's brand-new hospital, the Center for Care and Discovery. We perform advanced endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal diseases.

Irving Waxman, MD
Sara and Harold Lincoln Thompson Professor of Medicine and Surgery
Director, Center for Endoscopic Research and Therapeutics

Dr. Waxman is one of the world's leading authorities on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). His work also focuses on state-of-the-art endoscopic procedures for esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, lung, and rectal tumors. Current areas of clinical research include minimally invasive therapy for esophageal and colonic cancers and per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for achalasia.

Uzma Siddiqui, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine
Director, Endoscopic Ultrasound and Advanced Endoscopy Training

Dr. Siddiqui has a clinical focus on gastrointestinal oncology and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Other therapeutic endoscopic procedures she performs include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with the removal of stones and stenting of tumors to relieve obstruction in both the bile duct and the pancreatic duct, drainage of pancreatic cysts, nerve block for pain related to pancreatic cancer, radiofrequency ablation of Barrett’s esophagus, and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of large polyps or small tumors in the GI tract.

Andres Gelrud, MD, MMSc
Associate Professor of Medicine
Director, Pancreatic Diseases Center and Advanced Endoscopy

Dr. Gelrud is a clinical pancreatologist who provides care for adult and pediatric patients with acute, recurrent acute, and chronic pancreatitis, as well as treatment of complications from pancreatitis. He is an expert in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to diagnose and treat diseases of the bile duct and pancreas. Dr. Gelrud is highly skilled at performing transgastric pancreatic necrosectomy, a procedure to remove necrotic pancreatic tissue through the mouth using endoscopes, rather than through abdominal surgery.

Vani Konda, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Director, Endoscopic Research

Dr. Konda’s clinical practice and research focus on the diagnosis (including advanced imaging techniques) and treatment of Barrett’s esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disorders, and other esophageal conditions. She is also interested in colorectal cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. Under Dr. Konda’s direction, the CERT group has participated in multiple trials examining new endoscopic tools and techniques, which has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
