Research

More than half the time, recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) has no discernible cause. Finding effective treatments for these challenging cases depends on research, including groundbreaking studies our director has conducted. In fact, Dr. Mary Stephenson is at the forefront of the effort to find effective treatments for RPL. Currently, she is the principal investigator of an international randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) to prevent secondary recurrent miscarriage.

Dr. Stephenson’s other research has helped pinpoint ineffective treatments for RPL. Ineffective treatments not only waste time and money, but can also be heartbreaking for hopeful parents. In an earlier landmark study, for example, Dr. Stephenson’s research revealed that mononuclear-cell immunization was ineffective at treating RPL. This finding led the FDA to halt the use of mononuclear-cell immunization throughout the United States.

To be effective in reversing pregnancy loss, even proven treatments must be accurately calibrated. Working with a pharmaceutical scientist, Dr. Stephenson continues to compare different preparations of heparin to optimize dosing in the different trimesters of pregnancy and optimize pregnancy success.
