Shoulder and Elbow Care

The shoulder and elbow specialists at University of Chicago Medicine offer the complete range of non-surgical, minimally invasive (arthroscopic) and open surgery for teens, young adults and older adults. We treat conditions and illnesses related to:

  • Rotator cuff injury or tear, impingement syndrome
  • Shoulder and elbow arthritis
  • Fractures, including those that do not heal (non-union) or heal incorrectly (malunion)
  • Instability, separation or dislocation, labrum tears including SLAP tear (injury at the top of the labrum
  • Shoulder muscle injury
  • Nerve dysfunction
  • Scapula winging, abnormal movement of the shoulder blade
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tendonitis and bursitis
  • Repetitive motion

Tailored Treatment

We design individual treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs and goals. And we maximize use of non-surgical options prior to considering surgery. When surgery is necessary, our orthopaedic surgeons offer innovative and advanced operative therapies for repair of shoulder and elbow conditions, both minimally invasive and open. We strive to help patients regain full function and to return to their daily activities as soon as possible.

Surgical Services

  • Shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff, biceps, labrum tear and bone injury
  • Revision surgery after prior operative treatment
  • Total shoulder replacement
  • Reverse shoulder replacement (when the patient has a rotator cuff tear, this procedure uses deltoid muscles to work and position the arm)
  • Latarjet procedure (coracoid transfer for instability)
  • Tendon transfers

We work closely with your physical or occupational therapist to maximize results for non-operative, pre-operative and post-operative treatment.
