Expert Surgeons
Orthopaedics covers a broad array of medical conditions, so no one can be an expert in the full spectrum. Instead, each University of Chicago physician focuses on a few niche areas. Whether specializing in sports medicine, scoliosis, bone cancers, foot and ankle, joint replacement, pediatrics, shoulder, or hand and upper extremities, each of our physicians becomes highly knowledgeable and skilled in their particular area of specialization.

Multidisciplinary Approach
The University of Chicago Hospitals has a large and multidisciplinary staff--including more than 15 orthopaedic surgeons who team up with nurse clinicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, hand therapists, orthotics specialists, pathologists, radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pediatricians, molecular oncologists, and others.
Limb-Saving Techniques
Our surgeons have a preference for limb-salvage techniques--instead of amputation--for treating bone and soft tissue cancers. Whenever possible, University of Chicago orthopaedic surgeons prefer limb-salvage techniques which remove cancerous tumors but do not require amputation of the leg or arm. Our surgeons may use bone grafts or metallic endoprostheses to replace the diseased portions of bone.

We have some of the most current research focusing on the biomechanics of falling, biologic processes of flexor tendon healing, degenerative disk disease, bone repair, regeneration of bone and cartilage, and other issues.
