The Healing Arts at the Center for Care and Discovery
Art, long affiliated with healing, is an essential element at the University of Chicago Medicine & Biological Sciences.
More than 60 pieces by renowned local artists energize and enrich the lives of our patients and visitors at the Center for Care and Discovery. The video below showcases some of these diverse artists and their works.
Diverse artists contribute to a healing environment
The permanent art installation in the Center for Care and Discovery includes the works of more than 27 diverse talents. Several pieces by American color field pioneer Sam Gilliam grace lobbies and nurses' stations. The donated art, such as Michiko Itatani's "Untitled" painting from Cosmic Theater CT-7 conjures up a sense of joyful creativity in the Sky Lobby. Photographs by Alex MacLean and the soothing oil on panel Water: Pebble Beach #512 by Louise LeBourgeois invites guests to relax in a dream-like, other-worldly refuge.
The Healing Arts Program
The Healing Arts Program has a history of bringing the fine arts to our medical campus to share with patients, visitors, staff, and the surrounding community. The University of Chicago Department of Music, local choirs and independent musicians have brightened the campus with song while medical students-poets have recited original verse. Partnerships with museums have paved the way for rotating exhibits at our campus.
