Cash Stations

There are ATM machines located in the Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital lobby (second floor), the Goldblatt Pavilion lobby, the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM) lobby, and the Chicago Comer Children's Hospital lobby.

Chaplaincy

Chaplains offer spiritual, emotional, and religious support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for patients and family members. Our clinically trained chaplains from a variety of perspectives are available to support both inpatients and outpatients. Devotional material, sacraments, rosaries, electrical Sabbath candles, meditation cushions, and prayer rugs are available upon request. Resources in the local community can be called on to meet further special needs. Call (773) 702-6246 for more information.

Au Bon Pain in Mitchell Hospital

Food Services

Au Bon Pain
Located in the Mitchell Hospital lobby, it is open 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., Monday through Friday; 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. There is also one located in the lobby of the Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.

Cafeteria
Open every day, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (closed 10:30 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 4:30 p.m.) Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The cafeteria is located in the basement of Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital, near the "D" elevators.

Food Court
Located on the second floor of the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM), it offers snacks, beverages, sandwiches, and hot meals from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Argo Tea Café
Located in the DCAM lobby.

Vending Locations
Vending machines are located in the basement of Billings Hospital in the "S" corridor just east of the "C" elevator and in the basement of the Wyler Pavilion. Change machines for one dollar bills are available at these locations.

Starbucks Café
The University Bookstore building at 58th Street and Ellis Avenue has a small café and Starbucks.

Patient Meals
Most patients receive At Your Request Room Service Dining®, a special food service program that allows patients to order meals from an extensive menu at times when they want to eat.

Gift shop in Mitchell Hospital

Gift Shop

A wide selection of notions, snacks, and gift items is available in our gift shop. The location and hours are:
Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital lobby: Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Delivery to patient rooms is available for purchases of more than $5.00. If you would like to send a gift from the Mitchell lobby gift shop, please call (773) 834-1360, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central time zone. The gift shop accepts MasterCard, Visa, and American Express for phone transactions. Callers must have all patient information, including first and last name and room number, before an order can be placed.

Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and those with conditions that increase their risk of infection may not receive live flowers or plants.

Hotels and Housing Accommodations

During treatment, patients and their families may receive a discount at many Chicago hotels. You can find a complete listing on our hotel page or by calling HealthLink at 1-888-UCH-0200. Also, the nearby Ronald McDonald House is available on a first-come, first-served basis to those who meet the selection criteria. If you are interested, contact the University of Chicago social work office at (773) 702-1807.

Our staff can provide wheelchairs, directions to clinical areas, and other assistance.

  • Bernard A. Mitchell Lobby: Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
  • Chicago Lying-in Lobby (5841 S. Maryland): Monday through Friday, 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Goldblatt Lobby: Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
  • Surgery Brain Research Lobby: Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Interpreters

The University of Chicago Medicine is committed to providing interpreters at no charge for any patients who are not fluent in English or need American Sign Language translation services. To arrange for an interpreter in advance, please call Patient Special Services at (773) 702-6000 or Social Services at (773) 702-1807.

Music

The UCMC Department of Spiritual Care presents "Acoustic Spirit: Midday Music at the Mitchell Chapel," a free music series offered weekly on Thursdays at noon. Patients, family members, visitors, faculty, staff and students are all welcome to enjoy a time of healing and renewal through music. Featured artists will include faculty, staff and students from the University of Chicago, and musicians from the Hyde Park community.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy is located in the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine on the first floor near the gift shop. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is (773) 834-7002.

Walgreen's on Lake Park Avenue at 55th Street is open 24 hours a day. The pharmacy phone number is (773) 667-1177. This pharmacy accepts Medicaid insurance.

The nearest post office is located at 956 E. 58th Street. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except for national holidays.

Calls within Chicago and nearby suburbs are free. For details on making an outside phone call, see the information on the patient's bedside telephone. For all other calls, please purchase a debit card from machines located in the second floor lobby of Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital or in the first floor lobby of the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.

Volunteer Services

The Volunteer Department provides a variety of services, including newspaper and magazine delivery and the distribution of patient mail. Volunteers are also available for room visits, and can bring board games, cards, puzzles and more. Call (773) 702-4421 for information.
