In addition to achieving this standard, the University of Chicago has received special certifications from the Joint Commission for the following programs:

  • Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification: The University of Chicago Medicine was the first Chicago hospital to be designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center, a level of certification reserved for institutions with specific abilities to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. » Learn more about our stroke care.

Magnet Recognition
The University of Chicago Medicine received the prestigious Magnet Recognition® Program designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for excellence in nursing and patient care.

The distinction, awarded in April 2018 after a lengthy and rigorous review process, recognizes health care organizations that have the highest standards for nursing excellence and professional performance in a variety of areas, including evidence-based practice and research, education, ethics, leadership and collaboration.

National Cancer Institute: Comprehensive Cancer Center

The University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only two National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Illinois. Here, more than 200 of the brightest minds in research are focused on cancer discoveries--working together to bring breakthroughs from the lab to the bedside as quickly as possible. Our dedicated researchers and clinicians are conducting clinical trials in phases I, II, III and IV, leading to the development of new and better treatments. 

Cellular Therapy Accreditation
We are the only medical center in Illinois to be accredited for all adult and pediatric cellular therapy services, as defined by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). These services include adult and pediatric autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant therapy; bone marrow and apheresis collection; and processing services for the purposes of preparing cellular therapy products.

Accredited Cystic Fibrosis Centers
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has accredited both our adult and pediatric cystic fibrosis programs, which are staffed by physicians and nurses who specialize in the treatment of this chronic disease. The foundation funds accredited centers and performs yearly reviews to ensure each center provides the best possible care.

John A. Hartford Foundation Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine and Training
Our geriatrics program is one of a select group of such programs in the United States recognized by the John A. Hartford Foundation as a Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine and Training. This designation signifies that our geriatric medicine experts are actively training scientists and clinicians in the special knowledge and skills needed to ensure quality health care for older adults.

Pulmonary Hypertension Association Accreditation
The University of Chicago Medicine is the first Comprehensive Pulmonary Hypertension Care Center in Illinois to be recognized by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s accreditation program. Accreditation as a Comprehensive Pulmonary Hypertension Care Center means a program demonstrates a dedication to making a proper diagnosis and has the capacity to appropriately and comprehensively manage PAH patients through a set of criteria established by the PHA’s Scientific Leadership Council and the PHCC Oversight Committee -- comprised of members that are global leaders in the field of pulmonary hypertension.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction
Blue Distinction® is a designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality health care. Facilities recognized for distinguished clinical care and processes are designated as Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care in seven key specialty areas. University of Chicago programs have earned Blue Distinction status in six categories, which include:

  • Bariatric surgery
  • Complex and rare cancers
  • Knee and hip replacement
  • Maternity Care
  • Spine surgery
  • Transplants

Designation as Blue Distinction Centers® means these facilities’ overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians’ and leading professional organizations’ recommendations.
